What makes an affective photograph?

Composition is an important factor in a good photograph, for example the image above has a background, a foreground and middle ground. This is good because it enables viewers to see all the details in different proportions. The main focal point in this image is the lightning in the background as it lights up the area around it which allows you to see the detail of the canyon. The photograph is split into three different sections where on the right there is a dark area with minimal light and could be representing darkness, while on the left there is a lit section, while in the middle there is a section where light and dark clash.
